Oriental Fried Flank Steak (from Maryknoll Cookbook 1983, Tsuruye Yanaga, p.92)

1/2 cup shoyu
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp Sake or mirin
1 small piece of ginger, grated
1/2 cup flour
1 egg, beaten
2 Tbsp chopped green onions
flank steak, tenderized
1/2 cup oil
  • Prepare marinade by mixing shoyu, sugar, sake and grated ginger together
  • Marinate the flank steak for about 30 minutes
  • Flour the marinated meat and dip in beaten egg and green onion mixture
  • Fry meat in oil
  • Cut flank steak in cross-grain slices when serving
